IWD w/a Burger Queen

IWD? International Women’s Day

In 1908 it began in New York City.Today  it is observed all around the world. The United States even designates the whole month of March as ‘Women’s History Month’.  March 8th is a day to celebrate achievements and inspire women of all walks of life to encourage and inspire  little girls who will grow up to be women who will be agents and leaders of change whether globally, in the workforce,in the community or right at home.

So without getting into too much of it here..you can click the link above for the whole herstory:)

Last month a few of us Broads attended a burger eating contest but what also caught my interest was the fact that the GM was a woman.A position you don’t see too often in the restaurant/burger business. When she gave me her card on it it read *Burger Queen*

That was it.I had to find out more about her.I set up an interview date with one of my Burger Broads,Zane, and away we went to interview Laura and get to know the woman who is an integral piece of the puzzle at the burger joint.laurawzane

The following is in her own words.

“In the beginning I was quickly taking on more and more responsibility at BQM Ossington, and Saeed (the owner) was opening at Queen and Spadina.  At the time he had a manager down there too, although we were never assigned official titles.  I think some people would be uncomfortable with this, but I liked it because it allowed me to carve out my own place using what I felt my own strengths were, defining my own role.  The time came to order business cards, and Saeed’s title had always been Chief Burger Tester.  He suggested that we also give ourselves fun titles, relating to burgers – again I liked the fact that it was all unofficial, the opposite of corporate.  Once given the freedom to choose my own Burger Title – well, my inner broad knew the obvious choice immediately 🙂 Burger Queen it was.”

The video. It is about a 9 minute interview with ‘rapid fire’ questions at the end.

Come find out what it means for her to be a Broad, what gets her up in the morning and whether she prefers boxers or briefs.

The Beet -Organic Cafe

I first discovered The Beet at Burger Day held at Wychwood Barns back in June. They were one of many burger vendors sampling their burger bites.I had the lamb burger and was smitten. I just had to do a showcase about this burger, specifically, the Organic, lamb burger! Hold on Vegetarian burger lovers because as much as we went for the lamb burger the film shoot became all about the Tofu/Veggie burger.

Veggie Burger Heaven.. I didn’t think it existed but I found it here at The Beet.

The Beet-Organic Cafe is in the slow but surely,up and and coming neighbourhood called The Junction,in Toronto, located roughly in the area of Bloor St., Dupont St., Lansdowne Ave, and Dundas St. West. The “triangle” shape of the neighbourhood is formed by the three sets of railroad tracks on the north, west, and east sides. Like any neighbourhood before becoming gentrified it has had a dubious and rough reputation. However, when artists move into a neighbourhood it is inevitable that cafe’s,art galleries  and unique, interesting restaurants open up  creating a desirable place to hang out for the locals and lures people from other parts of the city to come find out what all the buzz is about.

The Beet has been part of the neighbourhood now for almost 5yrs owned and operated by 2 women. One a Certified Nutritionist, the other a Homeopathic Doctor.

Not only is the food local, fresh and organic, the heritage building they live in used to be a TD Bank so the decor was planned  eco-consciously.

We also recruited a new Burger Broad for this showcase/interview.Helen,one of the owners of the husband and wife team of The Food Cabbie food truck.A few weeks ago we did The Food Cabbie and Helen was hooked after seeing us do our thing. She wanted to be a Burger Broad too and an amazing job she did! She was so excited, she stayed up until 4am the night before for our burger breakfast at 10:30 am researching and finding everything out she could before the shoot. So, without further ado come inside and watch The Burger Broads gush over the burgers, especially the tofu burger.

Burgers are cooked in the oven!

Broads,burgers and b&b in Bewdley,Ontario

Hello fellow burger lovers,Life Lovers and Love lovers,

Ms.D here…

We are winding down around here at The BrOadHouSe and this will be one of our last few blog posts to share with you before we hunker down and make bigger plans for next year.

We wish ( I wish) we could divulge because we (I) are (am)over the moon as to what is to come but alas  cannot. It makes me crazy! I like to share asap.

I remember the days before internet when I would write my grandma a letter telling her everything that was going on in my life and then no sooner had I put a stamp on the envelope and put it in the mailbox I would phone her and tell her everything I just wrote in the letter.

(Hi Gram!,I know you’re listening/watching:)

Gotta love instant gratification! especially in this day and age, but I am also learning and mastering the lesson of patience and not to blow my load all at once,so to speak.

Before I go on about the burger and b&b in Bewdly,Ontario let’ just say before the year is out  we are throwing a party! a fundraiser for a Vegetarian food bank.-Yes.. a Vegetarian food bank!

If you live in Toronto(GTA) mark November 22cnd on your calendar!

Details will come soon and we hope to meet you in person. Finally!

As you may or may not know,I have been pretty discreet and mysterious as to my identity since I started this blog back in Dec 2011.

I didn’t want this  project to be about me or look like it was a burger hobby blog but rather an avenue for everyone  involved who have contributed in front of the camera and behind the scenes. As I like to toot….They are a Motley Crew Collective..lucky me!….and it was just as important to me that the owners and their independent establishments Shine under One umbrella..in this case.. Burger Love and Burger Culture.

We have never advertised, so to speak..meaning I have  never charged money to showcase/interview. As Producer/Director it is important to me to seek out not only delicious burgers but independent establishments whom I think have a unique, interesting and  inspiring story to share as well. I have an insatiable curiosity about life and people. And I like to share. It’s what I do.

Independent operations usually can’t afford to advertise. They rely on great food, great service, 24/7 passion and word of mouth. These establishments and their owners, to me, have the most interesting and relatable stories too and most importantly, a familial face that is inevitably lost in the corporate world of fast food chains no matter how savvy their social media strategies are.

Well.. with that all being said I do hope you will continue to follow our journey at The BrOadHouSe.com so when the time comes and allows I can and will keep you in the loop as to our progress.

I am glad that you love what we do and who we are.

Even if you didn`t I would still do this obsession anyways:)

Your support from the very beginning means more than you know.

It makes me happy to know that you are one of us.. first most….A Lover of Life,  a Lover of Love ..and of course burgers …in all their glory;) with a great tasting  beer of your wish to wash it down with too:)

Ok.. enough of the sentimentality already!

sheesh! let’s get on with it.

The first week of September I made a roadtrip with my lover,my husband to Bewdley,Ontario on the recommendation of a recently recruited Burger Broad who owns a B&B called AyeLightHouse, a quaint country Scottish flair,3 guest room secluded spot with layered vistas of hills and dales thick with trees and Rice Lake in your view.

The house itself was built around 1845, one of the earliest homes in the Gore’s Landing area and has been featured on `A Haunting`-a t.v Discovery.com series. Rhonda, your Light Keeper, is full of stories and more than happy to share them with guests.

And the breakfast in the morning is to die for! muah ha ha!

The Broad even has a firetruck soon to be turned into a Chip Wagon food truck!

Of course I stayed at  the b&b! (see all the pics here) Especially after eating that gorgeous, delicious burger, she insisted i make the trip for…. a burger recipe that hasn’t changed in 25yrs! at Rhino`s RoadHouse.

Ok.. i was hooked but besides that..as much as I was going for the burger I was eager to meet this Broad of a woman who ran the  joint. It would be my first encounter with a female proprietor because up until this point in time it had been men of independent establishments that I showcased/interviewed.

“Rhino’s legendary Rice Lake landmark” is on the North East shores of this bustling lake.It has had quite the history from rock’n’roll to folk bands back in its beginnings and  still goes strong in any season with boaters, motorbikes, atv’s,planes, helicopters and even hiking groups making it their place of destination for home cooked food..and burgers but of course.

The decor is a mishmash of old wood tables and chairs and 50’s dining sets. One of the dining areas has a grand and glorious working fireplace with a big Rhino head over the mantle where winter travellers  can also hang their wet socks and hats to dry while having a bite to eat or imbibe on the stellar bar selection. There’s a great family vibe too where the walls are full of art  and everything rhino.

Heather, the owner of Rhino’s was born in India of British decent. However, she grew up in England and left for Australia when she was 18yrs where she  lived and worked in the corporate world for 8yrs.Then,she went back to England and a couple of years later  made her way to Canada where she continued to be a top sales rep. After a few years of doing that she had had enough. She wanted to do something for herself and that’s when Rhino’s RoadHouse became her love and her baby.

Having such a large personality and a big heart isn’t always easy when you move and make home in a small town.Rumors started to fly that she had set up a bar in her living room and was also a Madame supplying girls to men who needed more than a fix for food.Time proved that it only helped the business and help put Bewdley on the map.

Couples have fallen in love there..have been married there…and then of course brought their kids there. The staff is pretty much family too.Kim, the newest waitress, has been there for 6yrs.

When I asked Heather what’s next on her journey she said that the natural progression would be to be a consultant for up and coming restaurant businesses “If it has happened in the restaurant biz,it has happened to me” but don’t be mislead, she has no intentions of letting go anytime soon.

So come inside and meet Heather and Burger Broad  Rockin`Rhonda.

As Heather says” Sooner or later,Everyone comes to Rhino’s

Windy Fields & Shrooms!

As much as we love burgers we also love what goes ON the burger between the buns.

When it comes to condiments and  toppings they are equally important to us as to what is IN the burger patty…so instead of interviewing/showcasing another burger joint we thought we’d take a break and do something a little different around here.

A few weeks ago Burger Broad Jo and myself put a little gravel in our travel and took a road trip to Grand Valley,Ontario,Canada to meet some local farmers, spending the day with Julie and Ralph from Windy Field Farms.

Being able to spend the day on a farm and learn in depth about agriculture and the food we city folk eat, the food the farmers grow, well let’s just say our respect and appreciation for farmers grew ten fold and shot through the roof!

Julie and Ralph Baumlisberger are farmers of non GMO corn, heirloom vegetables and mushrooms  (Blue Oyster, Shiitake and Cinnamon Caps)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

They lead very busy lives and I was very grateful that they took the time to show us around and even have a homemade burger bbq for us!

The burgers were made of locally grown Grand Valley Beef, garlic, green onion, lovage and a sweet surprise, apple!

When the Baumlisberger’s aren’t sowing, planting, re-planting or harvesting the gardens or picking mushrooms they make the time to share their knowledge of food and agriculture through their blog and facebook where you can learn about mushrooms, find lots of recipes, health information, updates about farmers’ markets and learn about  eating locally and in season.

Ralph is a past Chairman for the Dufferin Grain Farmers Association and The Ontario Growers Association and also takes the time to speak at events about the state of agriculture today.

So come along with us and meet Julie and Ralph

and then get your shroom fix;)

Meet the Man behind the Meat-Peter Sanagan

We came across Peter Sanagan at the first ever Burger Day held in Toronto at Wychwood Barns back in June.He was the guest expert speaker on how to choose and cook your meat when it comes to making a home made burger.

When you think of what a butcher looks like and/or acts like Peter is not your typical butcher. He is soft-spoken,well-spoken and is also quite the writer/blogger.Whether in his writing or when he speaks his unabashed farm boy charm shines through. The day we met up with him at his home away from home there was jazz music playing in the background of  his cozy 400 square foot store while he and his other 4 butchers (employees) were tenderly preparing up the day’s meats.

Just shy of the age of 40 years he has been a chef,a teacher and worked in some of Toronto’s best kitchens. After seeing a ‘for sale’ sign on an historical butcher shop in Kensington Market, Peter dived in and has been the owner/operator of what has become known to loyal customers as Sanagan’s Meat Locker, since 2009.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

With coffee in hand we went outside to chat with Peter, a champion and supporter of small farms within Ontario, and sustainability.

Come inside and meet the man behind the meat(your local butcher) whom we Broads endearingly call ‘The Intellectual Butcher’. This is Part 1.

Then watch Part 2 where Peter talks about how to detect organic meat, trust and branding, and his plans for a move to a bigger space which will still be in Kensington Market.(end of July) He also tells us what he thinks is the best choice of meat and percentage of fat content that makes up a delicious home made burger.

Note: if your attention span is shorter than 5 minutes then we suggest you move along. We aren’t here to give you quick and dirty soundbites. This is an interview. not a commercial.meow.

Happy Independence Day to our American fellow burger lovers!

This is a continuation of the previous interview. Frozen burgers…it comes down to price.Does the Kingpin of Bbq worry about hormones, meat being organic? just what is 100% pure beef? what about trims? does that include offals? (the edible internal parts of an animal, such as the heart, the lungs, sweetbread,(brains) liver, and tongue)

*The Meat of the Matter* w/Ted Reader pt 1 of 4

Canada Day (July 1st) is around the corner for us Canadian burger lovers and that means a whole lot of barbecues will be working hard and thousands if not millions of burgers will be eaten across this 145 year old glorious and beautiful country of ours. The biggest celebrations happen in our Capital,Ottawa as well as Niagara Falls. Last year my Burger Broad lovin’ man and I put our bikes on the train to Niagara Falls, cycled around  and then did the Whirpool aero car that soars over the Great Gorge separating Canada from the U.S. At night we watched the festivities and spectacular fireworks over The Falls…And Then!……. of course we had to… rent the ‘you have to do it at least once, cheesy motel room with the heart shaped jacuzzi’ with mirrored walls too.HA!

So in celebration of Canada, in celebration of burgers, we welcome you to the first in a four part series where we get to *The Meat of the Matter* with Grill King, Ted Reader.

A few weeks ago we sat down with Ted to talk about burgers, frozen burgers specifically. We always say NEVER eat frozen patty grocery store burgers but after talking with Ted, we have a new respect for them…but still won’t eat them:) Find out why and stay tuned for part 2.

Hey Canadian Burger Lovers! What are you grilling on Canada Day? Live in Toronto or making the trip to Toronto?  Meet Ted Reader at the Eaton Centre

I won’t be there.I will be somewhere deep in a forest camping and grilling home made burgers, but of course:) maybe I’ll take pictures.Maybe I won’t. After all it is a holiday:)

Wishing my fellow Canadian Burger Lovers a very wonderful, happy and delicious Canada Day!

Happy Birthday Canada!
