IWD w/a Burger Queen

IWD? International Women’s Day

In 1908 it began in New York City.Today  it is observed all around the world. The United States even designates the whole month of March as ‘Women’s History Month’.  March 8th is a day to celebrate achievements and inspire women of all walks of life to encourage and inspire  little girls who will grow up to be women who will be agents and leaders of change whether globally, in the workforce,in the community or right at home.

So without getting into too much of it here..you can click the link above for the whole herstory:)

Last month a few of us Broads attended a burger eating contest but what also caught my interest was the fact that the GM was a woman.A position you don’t see too often in the restaurant/burger business. When she gave me her card on it it read *Burger Queen*

That was it.I had to find out more about her.I set up an interview date with one of my Burger Broads,Zane, and away we went to interview Laura and get to know the woman who is an integral piece of the puzzle at the burger joint.laurawzane

The following is in her own words.

“In the beginning I was quickly taking on more and more responsibility at BQM Ossington, and Saeed (the owner) was opening at Queen and Spadina.  At the time he had a manager down there too, although we were never assigned official titles.  I think some people would be uncomfortable with this, but I liked it because it allowed me to carve out my own place using what I felt my own strengths were, defining my own role.  The time came to order business cards, and Saeed’s title had always been Chief Burger Tester.  He suggested that we also give ourselves fun titles, relating to burgers – again I liked the fact that it was all unofficial, the opposite of corporate.  Once given the freedom to choose my own Burger Title – well, my inner broad knew the obvious choice immediately 🙂 Burger Queen it was.”

The video. It is about a 9 minute interview with ‘rapid fire’ questions at the end.

Come find out what it means for her to be a Broad, what gets her up in the morning and whether she prefers boxers or briefs.

A Burger Eating Contest

On a wet, dull and dreary winter Sunday in January a couple of Broads joined in on a burger eating contest that we were invited to and hosted by BQM Burger here in Toronto at Queen and Spadina. This intersection is becoming burger central with  a McDonald’s on one corner,Hero on another, A&W and of course, BQM Burger since 2008. It doesn’t stop there.Burger’s Priest,a classic American cheeseburger joint, will be opening up a 3rd location in the area in May.

Regardless of how much is in your wallet or on your debit card that’s a good variety of  burgers to choose from within doorsteps of each other for Torontonian burger lovers! However, when it comes to so called competition there isn’t any. BQM Burger burgers are premium quality. The beef is family farmed in Ontario and raised without any added hormones or antibiotics.Every single patty is in house grinded-brisket,chuck and sirloin and served up medium rare and they also  have a large selection of craft beers to compliment any burger of your choosing.

Normally, Doing burger eating contests is not our style. We like to bite.chew.swallow and savor every bite very slowly. And in general, food eating contests of any kind are the epitome of food gluttony in the Western World. When I was approached by BQM to join in and attend the contest,I had to think about it.Was it something we, The Burger Broads, wanted to be a part of ? promote? Well, I decided to wrangle a couple of Broads to do it afterall because as much as we like to showcase burgers and interview owners I thought this could be a fun thing to do, just once and a good way to break up the monotony of  these dreary weeks of winter in January while also giving myself a break from the homework at hand of the ideas i have in store for this coming year.

The Burgers were kept simple.

No toppings of any sort.Only ketchup, mustard and aioli if you  chose to…..it was just meat and bun..and OMB! (oh, my Burger!) The meat! The Bun! both so good individually so imagine how burgasmic they were together. To me, the true test of a deliciously made burger is eating it with out all the accoutrements and BQM is The Truth! The meat was void of fillers and seasoned ever so lightly with kosher sea salt and black pepper. Perfect. The bun was an egg bun and it too was perfect. And perfect for the meat.

There were seven contestants in total and 2 of them were the only females,My Broads,Sharon and Krista.Seems to me these food eating contests are mostly attended by males so I was proud to have The  Burger Broads represent the female contingency.

These boys you’ll see in the video below were very serious about this contest while us Broads ate, laughed and gushed and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.bq7

So as you can figure we didn’t win the contest, which by the way was a case of Sleeman’s Draught, but because we ‘took on the boys‘ so to speak, we were awarded a 6pack:) Not a bad day at all for saying yes….free burgers and beer! and lotsa laughs….

…….and that’s how We Broads eat’n’roll!

Meet Nicole Dean-Burger Fiend

She  is  wry, dry and witty and  a one woman show waiting to happen. She writes, sings and plays the guitar too.

The Winner of the Mother’s Day 2011 Burger Broads T-shirt contest. We bent the rules when it came to the contest rules because We loved her story so much,so much that we decided to  make her a Burger Broad too. This was her submission.

“Good afternoon lovely ladies of Burgerland!

I am writing to you after just consuming my very own delicious, home made hamburger. It was nothing fancy, just a solid quarter pounder with some carmelized onions, tomato, lettuce topped with Jalapeno havarti. I like simple burgers from time to time you know? Like mom used to make on hot summer days. My girlfriend rather enjoyed it but between you and I, I’m excited to make it better the next time we make burgs (which, who’s kidding who? Will be tomorrow..)

Ahhh, burgers. I would consider a good burger to me my one true love. If I were a cartoon character I’d definitely be Jughead Jones because they are literally on my mind, ALL THE TIME. I like em all shapes and sizes, fat and sassy too! Well, as you know my name is Nicole and I’ve just come back to the city for the second time round, from my home province of New Brunswick. I come from a long line of burger loving lumberjacks and have been on the search for my perfect burg ever since I realized there IS life outside of a canteen truck that parks outside the rink during hockey games. See, burgers have always been there for me when times were rough. All those times I never picked up at the bar and who was there waiting for me at last call? A burger. You’re really hungry & on your way to a Bea Arthur impersonation contest, but you forgot your lunch! You’re starving but you’re already wearing the wig and rouge and you need something tasty and FAST: A burger. Last summer, I almost got arrested for passing out on someone’s front lawn because of a kareoke night that got away from me. When I was hanging my head in shame the next morning, wondering if anyone still loved me, you know who did? A burger.

When I left Fredericton last month, we had a going away party. Nothing fancy, just me in my banana suit and beers all around. My roomie knew how much I was going to miss our post hangover burger runs and how much they really mean to me, so she secretly started collecting money from everyone at the party, snuck away with some other party goers (I didn’t even notice) and came back with that glorious platter, consisting of 48 bacon cheeseburgers from McDonald’s. Now, I understand you don’t review chains and I think that’s great, and I would also like to point out that McDick’s is my least favorite choice if I were to make a fast food run, HOWEVER, no one can really deny a giant pyramid of burgs being waved in front of your face especially when your room mate knows you don’t really like McDonald’s, but had to go quantity over quality and THAT my friends, is why she made a separate trip to a Burger King and put a Whopper Jr on top, just for me. Gosh, I must’ve eaten at least 10 burgers that day. You see, before the party we went to a gourmet Burger place in Fredericton called Relish. (I’ll send you a link cause you should check it out even though it’s far. Wonderful wonderful expressions of burgers!) I tried a gourmet turkey patty with goat cheese, guacomole, a little pesto and their signature beet relish. Divine.

SO! To answer your question, that day I consumed 11 burgers. And you know what? I woke up the next day, realized I had hoarded 4 burgs in a drawer in the fridge, and I heated them up and ate those too!

I want to be a Burger Broad. I can send you more pictures of burgers and me eating them or whatever you want really. I could talk about Burgers all day and I love to write about them too. I’m an aspiring singer songwriter of the comedy variety and I currently don’t have a real job so anything you need help with or simply would like to chat about burgers, I’m down.

Thanks for taking the time to read this! I love what you’re doing for women out there. WOMEN LOVE BURGERS TOO. (And we’re probably better at making them so SUCK ITTT)

Nicole Banana Suit Dean

the picture of the long line of hamburgers, is from the young 18 year old who rang the order in. Everyone was in such excitement because no one had ever made that many, ALL AT ONCE! hahahah They asked him to take a picture then tag me in it so I could see it. What a great gift!

Meet Rockin’ Rhonda

What doesn’t this Broad do?!

She’s an actor,a mezzo-soprano trained in classical, she’s a musician who plays percussion and keys, and in her own words “a pontificator and a deliverer of off-colour jokes”.She is also skilled in precision driving, gun-handling, motorcycling, ski-dooing and minor stunt work as well as an accomplished and published professional writer .

She has a love for Robert Louis Stevenson,a penchant for cooking and all things lighthouses so it only makes sense that she is the owner of Aye LightHouse,a B&B where she has an out of service firetruck on the property that one day she wants to turn into a chip wagon food truck.

Currently she is studying in the UK  ( an MA Applied Music Psychology program) at Roehampton University. You can keep up with her at her blog here

When does she find the time to eat burgers? She makes the time!

Meet Candy

She’s a gregarious,no bullshit kinda gal.She likes to be in charge and her career as a Project Manager in the Health system allows her to do just that. When this Burger lovin’ Broad isn’t eating burgers or making her own on the bbq she loves going to concerts, working out, throwing dinner parties and playing baseball in a local Toronto league. She can hang with the guys too and give them a run for their money when it comes to burgers and beers …and chicken wings. She’s a self confessed neat freak who also admits she likes doing laundry. Her own laundry.

You can see her here in these videos at Dangerous Dan’s and Burger Stomper

The Beet -Organic Cafe

I first discovered The Beet at Burger Day held at Wychwood Barns back in June. They were one of many burger vendors sampling their burger bites.I had the lamb burger and was smitten. I just had to do a showcase about this burger, specifically, the Organic, lamb burger! Hold on Vegetarian burger lovers because as much as we went for the lamb burger the film shoot became all about the Tofu/Veggie burger.

Veggie Burger Heaven.. I didn’t think it existed but I found it here at The Beet.

The Beet-Organic Cafe is in the slow but surely,up and and coming neighbourhood called The Junction,in Toronto, located roughly in the area of Bloor St., Dupont St., Lansdowne Ave, and Dundas St. West. The “triangle” shape of the neighbourhood is formed by the three sets of railroad tracks on the north, west, and east sides. Like any neighbourhood before becoming gentrified it has had a dubious and rough reputation. However, when artists move into a neighbourhood it is inevitable that cafe’s,art galleries  and unique, interesting restaurants open up  creating a desirable place to hang out for the locals and lures people from other parts of the city to come find out what all the buzz is about.

The Beet has been part of the neighbourhood now for almost 5yrs owned and operated by 2 women. One a Certified Nutritionist, the other a Homeopathic Doctor.

Not only is the food local, fresh and organic, the heritage building they live in used to be a TD Bank so the decor was planned  eco-consciously.

We also recruited a new Burger Broad for this showcase/interview.Helen,one of the owners of the husband and wife team of The Food Cabbie food truck.A few weeks ago we did The Food Cabbie and Helen was hooked after seeing us do our thing. She wanted to be a Burger Broad too and an amazing job she did! She was so excited, she stayed up until 4am the night before for our burger breakfast at 10:30 am researching and finding everything out she could before the shoot. So, without further ado come inside and watch The Burger Broads gush over the burgers, especially the tofu burger.

Burgers are cooked in the oven!

Broads,burgers and b&b in Bewdley,Ontario

Hello fellow burger lovers,Life Lovers and Love lovers,

Ms.D here…

We are winding down around here at The BrOadHouSe and this will be one of our last few blog posts to share with you before we hunker down and make bigger plans for next year.

We wish ( I wish) we could divulge because we (I) are (am)over the moon as to what is to come but alas  cannot. It makes me crazy! I like to share asap.

I remember the days before internet when I would write my grandma a letter telling her everything that was going on in my life and then no sooner had I put a stamp on the envelope and put it in the mailbox I would phone her and tell her everything I just wrote in the letter.

(Hi Gram!,I know you’re listening/watching:)

Gotta love instant gratification! especially in this day and age, but I am also learning and mastering the lesson of patience and not to blow my load all at once,so to speak.

Before I go on about the burger and b&b in Bewdly,Ontario let’ just say before the year is out  we are throwing a party! a fundraiser for a Vegetarian food bank.-Yes.. a Vegetarian food bank!

If you live in Toronto(GTA) mark November 22cnd on your calendar!

Details will come soon and we hope to meet you in person. Finally!

As you may or may not know,I have been pretty discreet and mysterious as to my identity since I started this blog back in Dec 2011.

I didn’t want this  project to be about me or look like it was a burger hobby blog but rather an avenue for everyone  involved who have contributed in front of the camera and behind the scenes. As I like to toot….They are a Motley Crew Collective..lucky me!….and it was just as important to me that the owners and their independent establishments Shine under One umbrella..in this case.. Burger Love and Burger Culture.

We have never advertised, so to speak..meaning I have  never charged money to showcase/interview. As Producer/Director it is important to me to seek out not only delicious burgers but independent establishments whom I think have a unique, interesting and  inspiring story to share as well. I have an insatiable curiosity about life and people. And I like to share. It’s what I do.

Independent operations usually can’t afford to advertise. They rely on great food, great service, 24/7 passion and word of mouth. These establishments and their owners, to me, have the most interesting and relatable stories too and most importantly, a familial face that is inevitably lost in the corporate world of fast food chains no matter how savvy their social media strategies are.

Well.. with that all being said I do hope you will continue to follow our journey at The BrOadHouSe.com so when the time comes and allows I can and will keep you in the loop as to our progress.

I am glad that you love what we do and who we are.

Even if you didn`t I would still do this obsession anyways:)

Your support from the very beginning means more than you know.

It makes me happy to know that you are one of us.. first most….A Lover of Life,  a Lover of Love ..and of course burgers …in all their glory;) with a great tasting  beer of your wish to wash it down with too:)

Ok.. enough of the sentimentality already!

sheesh! let’s get on with it.

The first week of September I made a roadtrip with my lover,my husband to Bewdley,Ontario on the recommendation of a recently recruited Burger Broad who owns a B&B called AyeLightHouse, a quaint country Scottish flair,3 guest room secluded spot with layered vistas of hills and dales thick with trees and Rice Lake in your view.

The house itself was built around 1845, one of the earliest homes in the Gore’s Landing area and has been featured on `A Haunting`-a t.v Discovery.com series. Rhonda, your Light Keeper, is full of stories and more than happy to share them with guests.

And the breakfast in the morning is to die for! muah ha ha!

The Broad even has a firetruck soon to be turned into a Chip Wagon food truck!

Of course I stayed at  the b&b! (see all the pics here) Especially after eating that gorgeous, delicious burger, she insisted i make the trip for…. a burger recipe that hasn’t changed in 25yrs! at Rhino`s RoadHouse.

Ok.. i was hooked but besides that..as much as I was going for the burger I was eager to meet this Broad of a woman who ran the  joint. It would be my first encounter with a female proprietor because up until this point in time it had been men of independent establishments that I showcased/interviewed.

“Rhino’s legendary Rice Lake landmark” is on the North East shores of this bustling lake.It has had quite the history from rock’n’roll to folk bands back in its beginnings and  still goes strong in any season with boaters, motorbikes, atv’s,planes, helicopters and even hiking groups making it their place of destination for home cooked food..and burgers but of course.

The decor is a mishmash of old wood tables and chairs and 50’s dining sets. One of the dining areas has a grand and glorious working fireplace with a big Rhino head over the mantle where winter travellers  can also hang their wet socks and hats to dry while having a bite to eat or imbibe on the stellar bar selection. There’s a great family vibe too where the walls are full of art  and everything rhino.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Heather, the owner of Rhino’s was born in India of British decent. However, she grew up in England and left for Australia when she was 18yrs where she  lived and worked in the corporate world for 8yrs.Then,she went back to England and a couple of years later  made her way to Canada where she continued to be a top sales rep. After a few years of doing that she had had enough. She wanted to do something for herself and that’s when Rhino’s RoadHouse became her love and her baby.

Having such a large personality and a big heart isn’t always easy when you move and make home in a small town.Rumors started to fly that she had set up a bar in her living room and was also a Madame supplying girls to men who needed more than a fix for food.Time proved that it only helped the business and help put Bewdley on the map.

Couples have fallen in love there..have been married there…and then of course brought their kids there. The staff is pretty much family too.Kim, the newest waitress, has been there for 6yrs.

When I asked Heather what’s next on her journey she said that the natural progression would be to be a consultant for up and coming restaurant businesses “If it has happened in the restaurant biz,it has happened to me” but don’t be mislead, she has no intentions of letting go anytime soon.

So come inside and meet Heather and Burger Broad  Rockin`Rhonda.

As Heather says” Sooner or later,Everyone comes to Rhino’s

The Food Cabbie-Food Truck

YAY!  we found a food truck in Toronto that does authentic American burgers.Last weekend we took a road trip to Markham to catch up with Food Cabbie where they were dispatched to a hockey festival.

Burgers,Broads and NHL hockey players! When they weren’t busy signing autographs they were inside the arena coaching, giving tips and slapping sticks with hundreds of hockey enthusiasts but we did manage to get a photo taken with them.

The guy you see wearing the Burger Broads t-shirt was our special guest and Broad Boy,Jay. Every once in awhile we like to throw a guy into the mix and see what happens:) He was thrilled to meet the players, especially Steve Stamkos. The other players in attendance were Michael del Zotto,Brandon Gaunce,Cameron Gaunce  and Cody Hedgson. Maybe one day we will be able to sit down with them and share a burger on video!

Ok.. Back to the Food Cabbie. Our first food truck! Doing a food truck was challenging. The space is small and the truck is noisy due to the generator but we managed and it all worked out.

Toronto’s food truck business has flourished over this past summer. It seems there’s a new one on the streets every other weekend. The Food Cabbie has been in business for one year and we wanted to find out why the gypsy lifestyle was so appealing to Spiros, a chef by trade.

Originally from the U.S (Napa Valley,California) he has owned a couple restaurants before. One being Chicago Pizza Kitchen and the other Spiros-Steak and Seafood. First of all, we wanted to know why he came to Canada!?

Love, baby,Love! He met his now wife,Helen, through mutual friends and well, as he proves, ya gotta go where the heart leads. It’s a match made in food heaven. Helen grew up in the restaurant business where her family owns a beach bar in Kalamata,Greece and upon arriving they instantly welcomed us like family.

Together, they have made Food Cabbie a Toronto favorite on the food truck scene. They like moving around, meeting all kinds of people and sharing their love of food,in this case particularly authentic American fare.Every day is different and they can adjust the menu according to the event.Having a food truck also means that they can be dispatched anywhere. They do a lot of corporate parties and even street festivals so consider yourself lucky if you happen to see them in the downtown city core.

This particular day, for us, they served up The Patty Melt,The Cal-Mex  and The L.A Tommy Burger.

The Patty Melt

The all beef, freshly ground meat was WOW! Never tasted anything like it before. It was unadulterated with only salt and pepper for seasoning and it had a good chew.Sometimes when meat is ground it is too soft, too mushy. Some like it like that but I like texture! The cool thing about these too was that it was 2 patties layered, not on top of each other but more like overlapped.

                                                            The Cal-Mex Cheeseburger sans cheese

The L.A Tommy Burger

After we mowed down we wanted to have some fun with our special guest Broad Boy,Jay.

He was a good sport..just the way we like em;)So come inside and meet Spiros, watch Burger Broads KJ and Susan and Broad Boy Jay eat and find out if they liked their burger.Find out too if Jay got dunked.

Munch on Lovers!

Windy Fields & Shrooms!

As much as we love burgers we also love what goes ON the burger between the buns.

When it comes to condiments and  toppings they are equally important to us as to what is IN the burger patty…so instead of interviewing/showcasing another burger joint we thought we’d take a break and do something a little different around here.

A few weeks ago Burger Broad Jo and myself put a little gravel in our travel and took a road trip to Grand Valley,Ontario,Canada to meet some local farmers, spending the day with Julie and Ralph from Windy Field Farms.

Being able to spend the day on a farm and learn in depth about agriculture and the food we city folk eat, the food the farmers grow, well let’s just say our respect and appreciation for farmers grew ten fold and shot through the roof!

Julie and Ralph Baumlisberger are farmers of non GMO corn, heirloom vegetables and mushrooms  (Blue Oyster, Shiitake and Cinnamon Caps)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

They lead very busy lives and I was very grateful that they took the time to show us around and even have a homemade burger bbq for us!

The burgers were made of locally grown Grand Valley Beef, garlic, green onion, lovage and a sweet surprise, apple!

When the Baumlisberger’s aren’t sowing, planting, re-planting or harvesting the gardens or picking mushrooms they make the time to share their knowledge of food and agriculture through their blog and facebook where you can learn about mushrooms, find lots of recipes, health information, updates about farmers’ markets and learn about  eating locally and in season.

Ralph is a past Chairman for the Dufferin Grain Farmers Association and The Ontario Growers Association and also takes the time to speak at events about the state of agriculture today.

So come along with us and meet Julie and Ralph

and then get your shroom fix;)
