Meet Nicole Dean-Burger Fiend

She  is  wry, dry and witty and  a one woman show waiting to happen. She writes, sings and plays the guitar too.

The Winner of the Mother’s Day 2011 Burger Broads T-shirt contest. We bent the rules when it came to the contest rules because We loved her story so much,so much that we decided to  make her a Burger Broad too. This was her submission.

“Good afternoon lovely ladies of Burgerland!

I am writing to you after just consuming my very own delicious, home made hamburger. It was nothing fancy, just a solid quarter pounder with some carmelized onions, tomato, lettuce topped with Jalapeno havarti. I like simple burgers from time to time you know? Like mom used to make on hot summer days. My girlfriend rather enjoyed it but between you and I, I’m excited to make it better the next time we make burgs (which, who’s kidding who? Will be tomorrow..)

Ahhh, burgers. I would consider a good burger to me my one true love. If I were a cartoon character I’d definitely be Jughead Jones because they are literally on my mind, ALL THE TIME. I like em all shapes and sizes, fat and sassy too! Well, as you know my name is Nicole and I’ve just come back to the city for the second time round, from my home province of New Brunswick. I come from a long line of burger loving lumberjacks and have been on the search for my perfect burg ever since I realized there IS life outside of a canteen truck that parks outside the rink during hockey games. See, burgers have always been there for me when times were rough. All those times I never picked up at the bar and who was there waiting for me at last call? A burger. You’re really hungry & on your way to a Bea Arthur impersonation contest, but you forgot your lunch! You’re starving but you’re already wearing the wig and rouge and you need something tasty and FAST: A burger. Last summer, I almost got arrested for passing out on someone’s front lawn because of a kareoke night that got away from me. When I was hanging my head in shame the next morning, wondering if anyone still loved me, you know who did? A burger.

When I left Fredericton last month, we had a going away party. Nothing fancy, just me in my banana suit and beers all around. My roomie knew how much I was going to miss our post hangover burger runs and how much they really mean to me, so she secretly started collecting money from everyone at the party, snuck away with some other party goers (I didn’t even notice) and came back with that glorious platter, consisting of 48 bacon cheeseburgers from McDonald’s. Now, I understand you don’t review chains and I think that’s great, and I would also like to point out that McDick’s is my least favorite choice if I were to make a fast food run, HOWEVER, no one can really deny a giant pyramid of burgs being waved in front of your face especially when your room mate knows you don’t really like McDonald’s, but had to go quantity over quality and THAT my friends, is why she made a separate trip to a Burger King and put a Whopper Jr on top, just for me. Gosh, I must’ve eaten at least 10 burgers that day. You see, before the party we went to a gourmet Burger place in Fredericton called Relish. (I’ll send you a link cause you should check it out even though it’s far. Wonderful wonderful expressions of burgers!) I tried a gourmet turkey patty with goat cheese, guacomole, a little pesto and their signature beet relish. Divine.

SO! To answer your question, that day I consumed 11 burgers. And you know what? I woke up the next day, realized I had hoarded 4 burgs in a drawer in the fridge, and I heated them up and ate those too!

I want to be a Burger Broad. I can send you more pictures of burgers and me eating them or whatever you want really. I could talk about Burgers all day and I love to write about them too. I’m an aspiring singer songwriter of the comedy variety and I currently don’t have a real job so anything you need help with or simply would like to chat about burgers, I’m down.

Thanks for taking the time to read this! I love what you’re doing for women out there. WOMEN LOVE BURGERS TOO. (And we’re probably better at making them so SUCK ITTT)

HAVE A GREAT DAY BURGER BROADS!

Sincerely,
Nicole Banana Suit Dean

the picture of the long line of hamburgers, is from the young 18 year old who rang the order in. Everyone was in such excitement because no one had ever made that many, ALL AT ONCE! hahahah They asked him to take a picture then tag me in it so I could see it. What a great gift!

2013 BINGO!

Welcome to 2013!

I don’t make resolutions  but one of my New Years traditions, well the only one, is to jump off of a chair at midnite to signify jumping INTO the New Year chairjumping

………and What  a crazy, freakin’ first couple of weeks it has been!!!.

I don’t know about you but is it summer yet?!

New Years day my significant other collapsed in the kitchen due to an unsuspecting kidney infection. It left his leg numb, cold and without any motor skills. We went to the ER where we sat for nearly 12 hrs while the handful of doctors on duty asked a million questions and poked and prodded and took tests before he was finally admitted to a room where he stayed for 4 days.

Turns out he had Rhabdomyolysis. He’s home now and back to being his Self  but f*ck was it stressful and downright sobering. We just adopted a 12 yr old dog from the Humane Society 3 days before Christmas and now I was left to do the dog walking and household duties on top of coming down with a wicked  cold that went back and forth between my head and chest AND I was on my period.Good times! HA! Needless to say, Life has to go on so I had been popping flu/cold pills and Nyquil to get through it all.And this is why I am writing this blog post. That medication makes for  some very vivid if not strange dreams.

I had this dream about 3 days ago now but cannot get it out of my head.

I dreamt that I was  a Bingo Caller wearing a beautiful fox fur coat at a Bingo  Hall.

Calling out numbers…B5.B12.B22.I8..and then a skinny Barbie of a woman in the crowd yells hysterically BINGO! BINGO! BINGO! but she was screaming like it was a life and death matter more than about being a winner…..And you know what her prize was? yup.You guessed it.Burgers. 5 platters of mini burgers were delivered to her right there at her table and she ate every single one of them while other people looked on in disgust and awe while others were cheering her on. When i woke up I went online to search out what the hell that dream meant to me cuz’ I like to interpret my dreams:)

I typed in Fox Fur and Bingo (first,I must clarify, I don’t own or wear a fur coat and I don’t play bingo)  and the first thing that popped up was this online Bingo site called Foxy Bingo out of the UK where there is this mascot (fox) wearing a purple velvet suit on the front page.HILARIOUS! but What am I to make of this dear reader?

I would love your take on my dream and what it means.

Or should I chalk it up to the medication?

Well, On that note May Your dreams for the New Year become a reality.

May 2013 be full of opportunity, abundance and adventure and of course, Health:) and May it be A Bingo! of a Year.

In the coming weeks I will be sharing with you my journey the next steps what I have in store for this idea called *Burger Broads*.

Thanks for riding the bus with me:)

Stay Hungry!

Burger Ball 2012 Wrap Up

November was a whirlwind of a month.December too and today being December 21st  glad that it’s almost over! the year that is,not the world;) It’s always this time of year that there are so many events and parties to attend and we were thrilled to have a great turnout at our very first annual Burger Ball raising awareness for a local Vegetarian Food Bank. And what an eclectic bunch of people they were! Lots of prizes were given away courtesy of Ted Reader,Mysteriously Yours Dinner Theatre, Aye LightHouse B&B, Glory Hole Doughnuts, and Rebel Geisha to name but a few.

BurgerBallPoster25website  This Burger Ball/fundraiser is something we want to do every year.To help raise awareness and /or funds for food related or women related charities that don’t get much press, exposure or financial assistance.

This year our guest of honor,Honorary Burger Broad, was Dana McCauley, one of the  judges from Recipe to Riches on The Food Network. She is even more of a Broad in person!

We hosted it at a burger joint called Burger Stomper which was also featured on Dragon’s Den recently and they did a delicious job of catering to the meatatarian and vegetarian crowd with their patented Burger Stomper while our official sponsor SteamWhistle kept our whistles wet.

As I mentioned in a previous post, we are winding down around here at the BroadHouse preparing and making plans for next year.

Do hope you will continue to follow our journey as we go forth with new, unpredictable and exciting things!

Here’s an article from On The Danforth (magazine) about the party.

and here’s a video of me, Ms.D giving a speech and presenting the award to Dana, filmed by one of the party-goers

Meet Rockin’ Rhonda

What doesn’t this Broad do?!

She’s an actor,a mezzo-soprano trained in classical, she’s a musician who plays percussion and keys, and in her own words “a pontificator and a deliverer of off-colour jokes”.She is also skilled in precision driving, gun-handling, motorcycling, ski-dooing and minor stunt work as well as an accomplished and published professional writer .

She has a love for Robert Louis Stevenson,a penchant for cooking and all things lighthouses so it only makes sense that she is the owner of Aye LightHouse,a B&B where she has an out of service firetruck on the property that one day she wants to turn into a chip wagon food truck.

Read more here

Currently she is studying in the UK  ( an MA Applied Music Psychology program) at Roehampton University. You can keep up with her at her blog here

When does she find the time to eat burgers? She makes the time!

See her in this video Rhino’s RoadHouse

A Drive-Thru microwave burger?! really?

ok.. around here I don’t talk about fast food chain burgers or frozen patty burgers  let alone EAT them BUT  I was in the grocery store the other day and saw this ready made bacon cheeseburger in a box in the frozen food section.

Curiosity always gets the better of me. For the most part I will try anything once. Otherwise you can’t make an informed opinion. And again.. curiosity rules!

For blog vanity sake I also thought this would make an interesting blog post;)

A microwave burger?! wtf?! and in less than 1 minute?! Surely, it possibly COULD NOT  taste good. Surely, my stomach, my bowels and my  butt would pay for it the next day and I would be ever so sorry that I let curiosity rule….especially for this ready made frozen bacon cheeseburger that you microwave and it’s ready in 1 minute. BUT I HAD TO FIND OUT.Just HOW BAD COULD IT REALLY BE?

 I followed the instructions.

Open one end of the plastic bag and put it in the microwave for exactly

1 minute.

This is how it came out of the microwave.a sloppy slice of American Cheese with 2 strips of that fake bacon stuff.

You know what i’m talking about.

The bun was somewhat soggy but of course. It was afterall in the microwave.

To help make it hopefully a tastier burger than it was promising to look I added a slice of tomato and a squirt of Heinz.

(There is no other kind, when it comes to Ketchup/Catsup)

You know what? It wasn’t as horrible as I thought it would be but then again, it was after midnite and I had already had a couple shots of Jack. I was hungry.

It tasted pretty much like it advertised itself to be. A burger that you would get at a fast food chain burger joint….but in my now informed opinion, worse.

But I did eat the entire thing.Like I said.I was hungry.

Would I do it again? NO.

Dana McCauley AND an Anonymous Donor!

WE ARE OVER THE MOON!

You know that saying “When it rains it pours”?

Well it’s pouring Burgers!

I was busy all weekend attending a Documentary Summit here in Toronto and when I came home last night to get back to burger business there was an email notice that someone donated to the fundraiser because they couldn’t be there in person.

The awesome thing was they wished not to be named so all I can say is that this person is a Burger Lover, ( a vegetarian burger lover) and a Lover of Broads who loves what we are doing.

“You gals are a special bunch.I have been following you on facebook and subscribed to your blog for the past couple of months. I am impressed that being Burger Broads you are doing a fundraiser for The Ontario Vegetarian Food Bank.I will not be able to attend so instead I would like to donate the amount of (   ).Much success to your event and in  future endeavours.”

So why am I telling you this?

This person donated quite a large sum of money so I thought it only fair that I pass on the goodwill and share. The ticket price is now $25 instead of $45.

The other great news is Dana McCauley of The Food Network/Recipe to Riches has accepted our invitation to present her with an “Honorary Burger Broad” award at the party!

So, what exactly does it mean to be a Broad? Find out here!

Woot! Did I mention? I am over the moon! Munch on Lovers!

and THANK-YOU Anonymous Donor!

Meet Candy

She’s a gregarious,no bullshit kinda gal.She likes to be in charge and her career as a Project Manager in the Health system allows her to do just that. When this Burger lovin’ Broad isn’t eating burgers or making her own on the bbq she loves going to concerts, working out, throwing dinner parties and playing baseball in a local Toronto league. She can hang with the guys too and give them a run for their money when it comes to burgers and beers …and chicken wings. She’s a self confessed neat freak who also admits she likes doing laundry. Her own laundry.

You can see her here in these videos at Dangerous Dan’s and Burger Stomper

Guest Post from Philadelphia!

We thought we’d do something a little different around here fellow burger lovers!

We reached out on twitter asking if someone would like to do a guest blog post and our friends from Philadelphia responded.Read on and drool!

Can’t wait to go to Philly!,

Ms.D

The burger club of Philadelphia was founded on a pretty simple
principle – everyone loves a burger. A burger is generally cheap and
most restaurants will offer one.  We meet the last Wednesday of the
month at a different spot in Philly famous for burgers.

We have no dues or rules, just fun. We eat, we rate, we eat some more.

Ms.D of The BroadHouse and I thought it would be fun and  informative to
exchange a blog post of our top three burgers in our respective cities.

If any of you are heading to Philadelphia for business or
pleasure, shoot us a line – we’d love to show you around!

Otherwise this list should at least point you in the right direction.

The Royal Tavern
www.royaltavern.com/
937 East Passyunk Avenue  Philadelphia, PA 19147

The Royal Tavern is a little neighborhood spot in South Philly. They
serve upscale pub grub with many excellent vegetarian dishes. Many
Philly restaurants are converted row homes, the Royal is one of them.
The restaurant is long and narrow with a nice little bar, a few tables
and dim lighting that is both comforting and forgiving. The Royal
burger is nothing to take lightly. It has bacon, caramelized onions,
smokes gouda, peppers and a house made chile mayo. This is a tall
burger with some serious flavor. If you want a burger and experience
that is unapologetically Philly – go straight to the Royal.

Sketch Burger
www.sketch-burger.com
413 East Girard Avenue  Philadelphia, PA 19125Photo by Nicholas Chen (www.myinnerfatty.com)

This burger joint (and it is in all facets of the term a true “burger
joint” – you’ll know what I mean when you visit) flew under my radar
for far too long. It’s in the Northern Liberties section of the city
and if you’re visiting Philly you probably won’t find yourself in this
section unless you’re going with a specific purpose. The restaurant
itself is very laid back, maybe too much so. The atmosphere is almost
not worthy of the burgers they serve, it’s best described as a
take-out restaurant with tables. The walls are covered with sketches
(get it??) of burgers that patrons have drawn. The burgers are
fantastic. They’re juicy, well-seasoned and they have amazing
toppings. Sketch offers regular beef patties, kobe beef, turkey
burgers and vegan bean patties. The special burgers are the smashed
onion, Cyclops burger (bacon & egg), and the truffle butter burger.
All are amazing and under $9.

Smokin Betty’s
www.smokinbettys.com
116 South 11th Street  Philadelphia, PA 19107Photo by Kit Farman (www.kitfphoto.com)

Smokin Betty’s is a really nice comfort food restaurant located in
Center City. Smokin Betty’s is a very large restaurant for being in
the middle of the city. They have two floors (and two bars!) with lots
of space to stretch out and relax. They host a lot of events and happy
hours throughout the year and is a great place to go with a big group
(just call ahead, they’re very accommodating). The staff is quite
friendly and will break their backs to make you feel at home. Their
burgers are out.of.this.world. Five options – the Betty’s burger,
tur-duck-en, angus, turkey and veggie burger! All of them are truly
amazing. The tur-duck-en is decadent and tastes like a true American
Thanksgiving dinner.  The veggie burger is hearty and an amazing
option for a vegetarian (or not, it’s that good!). In my mind though,
nothing compares to the Betty’s Burger. This thing is HUGE. They serve
it with a giant steak knife through the middle. It has sirloin, confit
pork belly, avocado, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, roasted garlic aioli &
runny sunny side up egg. This burger is the burger to end all burgers.
You won’t be hungry for a week after eating this thing.

Well I hope this has given you some good burger options if you happen
to be in the Philly area. As I said before, members from the burger
club would be more than willing to enjoy a few drinks and a burger
with you if you’re in town and want to meet some locals.
