Celebrities Eating Burgers

North American Culture. What is it exactly?

apple pie? sports?entertainment? Hollywood? fast food? albeit an appropriation of food from other cultures,ie:pizza and without argument, hands down…burgers.

Why are North Americans obsessed with food? with celebrities? And why do we like to see celebrities eating? especially burgers? and WHY must we insist on taking pictures?!

I looked around the web and this is what I found.

If you have found a picture of a celebrity eating a burger please post in the comments!

It was funny.sad.pathetic and just one example of North American Culture at it’s worst.

I still love burgers.

A Burger Eating Contest

On a wet, dull and dreary winter Sunday in January a couple of Broads joined in on a burger eating contest that we were invited to and hosted by BQM Burger here in Toronto at Queen and Spadina. This intersection is becoming burger central with  a McDonald’s on one corner,Hero on another, A&W and of course, BQM Burger since 2008. It doesn’t stop there.Burger’s Priest,a classic American cheeseburger joint, will be opening up a 3rd location in the area in May.

Regardless of how much is in your wallet or on your debit card that’s a good variety of  burgers to choose from within doorsteps of each other for Torontonian burger lovers! However, when it comes to so called competition there isn’t any. BQM Burger burgers are premium quality. The beef is family farmed in Ontario and raised without any added hormones or antibiotics.Every single patty is in house grinded-brisket,chuck and sirloin and served up medium rare and they also  have a large selection of craft beers to compliment any burger of your choosing.

Normally, Doing burger eating contests is not our style. We like to bite.chew.swallow and savor every bite very slowly. And in general, food eating contests of any kind are the epitome of food gluttony in the Western World. When I was approached by BQM to join in and attend the contest,I had to think about it.Was it something we, The Burger Broads, wanted to be a part of ? promote? Well, I decided to wrangle a couple of Broads to do it afterall because as much as we like to showcase burgers and interview owners I thought this could be a fun thing to do, just once and a good way to break up the monotony of  these dreary weeks of winter in January while also giving myself a break from the homework at hand of the ideas i have in store for this coming year.

The Burgers were kept simple.

No toppings of any sort.Only ketchup, mustard and aioli if you  chose to…..it was just meat and bun..and OMB! (oh, my Burger!) The meat! The Bun! both so good individually so imagine how burgasmic they were together. To me, the true test of a deliciously made burger is eating it with out all the accoutrements and BQM is The Truth! The meat was void of fillers and seasoned ever so lightly with kosher sea salt and black pepper. Perfect. The bun was an egg bun and it too was perfect. And perfect for the meat.

There were seven contestants in total and 2 of them were the only females,My Broads,Sharon and Krista.Seems to me these food eating contests are mostly attended by males so I was proud to have The  Burger Broads represent the female contingency.

These boys you’ll see in the video below were very serious about this contest while us Broads ate, laughed and gushed and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.bq7

So as you can figure we didn’t win the contest, which by the way was a case of Sleeman’s Draught, but because we ‘took on the boys‘ so to speak, we were awarded a 6pack:) Not a bad day at all for saying yes….free burgers and beer! and lotsa laughs….

…….and that’s how We Broads eat’n’roll!

The Society of Burgers 2

The Society of Burgers is back!

Ola Burgerbuds,

Welcome back to the second chapter of The Book of Burgerology, as we continue our journey of burger enlightenment and realization.

In the first chapter, The Book of Burgerality, I summated for you a variety of common and rare burger personalities. Have a read…you’ll fit in there somewhere and then tell us what your personality is….we are a nosy bunch!!

Now, SOB is ready to reveal more exciting and perhaps burger altering speculatives on burger fare of which I call, The Book of Beasts Meats.

The Book of Beast Meats is a compilation of what your personality may be depending of the type of meat that lays between your buns.

Your personalized BBM is here…what personality type are you?

The Naturalist: Veggie

They refuse to eat anything with legs and wear that proudly on a t-shirt they hand screened themselves with environmentally conscious materials. They’ve done their homework; studying and testing many types of veggie burgers only to find out that the best kind of veggie burger are the ones with real meat. Don’t worry, it’s not to late; everyone eventually finds their way back to meat….it’s inevitable!” The naturalist can also be referred to as the learner. They can often be found snacking on oatmeal and grains and may have OCD.

The Borgs: Beef

Most of us are willing participants in this collective and this collective serves only one master…Hail King Cow! This ‘hive mind’ of subjugated recipients are controlled by a force larger than themselves and it usually consists of a whole lot of cheese & bacon.  If you pay close attention you may catch ‘borgs’ in their collective splendor. Just head out to any Micky D’s around lunchtime and you’ll see for yourself but DO NOT attempt to approach a Borg if you do see one out & about; they confuse easily and have been know to revolt. Only approach a Borg if you want to be assimilated.

The Urbanite: Chicken

These self-proclaimed urban hipsters would choose fowl over bovine any day. They won’t commit to the extreme means of the Naturalist because it consists of way too much work but they like to be perceived as the group that ‘gets it and gives a shit’. They are somewhat consciously aware, always seem to be just heading out to a meeting, they watch John Stewart and sleep with one hand on their Ipad. They love spending money on unnecessary things and like to conversate about themselves, their art project, their loft or their scooter.

The Suit: Lamb or Bison

These people have jobs and usually pretty good ones, so they like to show off their culinary prowless by not playing the game the rest of the kids are playing. The Suits like to be above the heads of cows, so to speak, and delight in big game hunting, cigars, traveling and fashion, even if it’s just for show. They eat big as well, slapping down some fresh lamb and bison burgers on the grill or casing out favorite high stakes eateries that serve the ‘not so common.’ Don’t hate them for their celebrity lifestyles. Get a job, buy a BBQ and head to Sanagans Meats in Kensington Market and hook yourself up with some fine beast meats. Now, go impress your 3 friends.

The Radical: Fish

This group is the most unassuming of all. Always swimming up stream from the crowd, they strive on social anarchy…or at least talk about it a lot. They wear predominately black and always carry (not subjected to actually reading it) a hardcover biography of either Hunter S Thompson or Edgar Allen Poe in their vintage leather mailbag. They can often be found huddling in a small tight group discussing the civil rights of fish and the Amish. They may also be minimalists in their lifestyle and have been spotted shopping at IKEA.

The Outsider: Turkey

Turkey burger luvers just want fit in and will put their necks on the chopping block for just about anyone who asks. Lacking a certain amount of self esteem, one could call them pushovers; easily influenced and usually not in a good way. They spend their time at shopping malls because no has told them that it’s not cool anymore and sleep with a night light on…just because. They are not an impressive bunch but they are consistent and if you ever need someone to do something for you…just ask one of these guys.

Now go and get messy with your favorite burger!

Broads,burgers and b&b in Bewdley,Ontario

Hello fellow burger lovers,Life Lovers and Love lovers,

Ms.D here…

We are winding down around here at The BrOadHouSe and this will be one of our last few blog posts to share with you before we hunker down and make bigger plans for next year.

We wish ( I wish) we could divulge because we (I) are (am)over the moon as to what is to come but alas  cannot. It makes me crazy! I like to share asap.

I remember the days before internet when I would write my grandma a letter telling her everything that was going on in my life and then no sooner had I put a stamp on the envelope and put it in the mailbox I would phone her and tell her everything I just wrote in the letter.

(Hi Gram!,I know you’re listening/watching:)

Gotta love instant gratification! especially in this day and age, but I am also learning and mastering the lesson of patience and not to blow my load all at once,so to speak.

Before I go on about the burger and b&b in Bewdly,Ontario let’ just say before the year is out  we are throwing a party! a fundraiser for a Vegetarian food bank.-Yes.. a Vegetarian food bank!

If you live in Toronto(GTA) mark November 22cnd on your calendar!

Details will come soon and we hope to meet you in person. Finally!

As you may or may not know,I have been pretty discreet and mysterious as to my identity since I started this blog back in Dec 2011.

I didn’t want this  project to be about me or look like it was a burger hobby blog but rather an avenue for everyone  involved who have contributed in front of the camera and behind the scenes. As I like to toot….They are a Motley Crew Collective..lucky me!….and it was just as important to me that the owners and their independent establishments Shine under One umbrella..in this case.. Burger Love and Burger Culture.

We have never advertised, so to speak..meaning I have  never charged money to showcase/interview. As Producer/Director it is important to me to seek out not only delicious burgers but independent establishments whom I think have a unique, interesting and  inspiring story to share as well. I have an insatiable curiosity about life and people. And I like to share. It’s what I do.

Independent operations usually can’t afford to advertise. They rely on great food, great service, 24/7 passion and word of mouth. These establishments and their owners, to me, have the most interesting and relatable stories too and most importantly, a familial face that is inevitably lost in the corporate world of fast food chains no matter how savvy their social media strategies are.

Well.. with that all being said I do hope you will continue to follow our journey at The BrOadHouSe.com so when the time comes and allows I can and will keep you in the loop as to our progress.

I am glad that you love what we do and who we are.

Even if you didn`t I would still do this obsession anyways:)

Your support from the very beginning means more than you know.

It makes me happy to know that you are one of us.. first most….A Lover of Life,  a Lover of Love ..and of course burgers …in all their glory;) with a great tasting  beer of your wish to wash it down with too:)

Ok.. enough of the sentimentality already!

sheesh! let’s get on with it.

The first week of September I made a roadtrip with my lover,my husband to Bewdley,Ontario on the recommendation of a recently recruited Burger Broad who owns a B&B called AyeLightHouse, a quaint country Scottish flair,3 guest room secluded spot with layered vistas of hills and dales thick with trees and Rice Lake in your view.

The house itself was built around 1845, one of the earliest homes in the Gore’s Landing area and has been featured on `A Haunting`-a t.v Discovery.com series. Rhonda, your Light Keeper, is full of stories and more than happy to share them with guests.

And the breakfast in the morning is to die for! muah ha ha!

The Broad even has a firetruck soon to be turned into a Chip Wagon food truck!

Of course I stayed at  the b&b! (see all the pics here) Especially after eating that gorgeous, delicious burger, she insisted i make the trip for…. a burger recipe that hasn’t changed in 25yrs! at Rhino`s RoadHouse.

Ok.. i was hooked but besides that..as much as I was going for the burger I was eager to meet this Broad of a woman who ran the  joint. It would be my first encounter with a female proprietor because up until this point in time it had been men of independent establishments that I showcased/interviewed.

“Rhino’s legendary Rice Lake landmark” is on the North East shores of this bustling lake.It has had quite the history from rock’n’roll to folk bands back in its beginnings and  still goes strong in any season with boaters, motorbikes, atv’s,planes, helicopters and even hiking groups making it their place of destination for home cooked food..and burgers but of course.

The decor is a mishmash of old wood tables and chairs and 50’s dining sets. One of the dining areas has a grand and glorious working fireplace with a big Rhino head over the mantle where winter travellers  can also hang their wet socks and hats to dry while having a bite to eat or imbibe on the stellar bar selection. There’s a great family vibe too where the walls are full of art  and everything rhino.

Heather, the owner of Rhino’s was born in India of British decent. However, she grew up in England and left for Australia when she was 18yrs where she  lived and worked in the corporate world for 8yrs.Then,she went back to England and a couple of years later  made her way to Canada where she continued to be a top sales rep. After a few years of doing that she had had enough. She wanted to do something for herself and that’s when Rhino’s RoadHouse became her love and her baby.

Having such a large personality and a big heart isn’t always easy when you move and make home in a small town.Rumors started to fly that she had set up a bar in her living room and was also a Madame supplying girls to men who needed more than a fix for food.Time proved that it only helped the business and help put Bewdley on the map.

Couples have fallen in love there..have been married there…and then of course brought their kids there. The staff is pretty much family too.Kim, the newest waitress, has been there for 6yrs.

When I asked Heather what’s next on her journey she said that the natural progression would be to be a consultant for up and coming restaurant businesses “If it has happened in the restaurant biz,it has happened to me” but don’t be mislead, she has no intentions of letting go anytime soon.

So come inside and meet Heather and Burger Broad  Rockin`Rhonda.

As Heather says” Sooner or later,Everyone comes to Rhino’s

Happy Independence Day to our American fellow burger lovers!

This is a continuation of the previous interview. Frozen burgers…it comes down to price.Does the Kingpin of Bbq worry about hormones, meat being organic? just what is 100% pure beef? what about trims? does that include offals? (the edible internal parts of an animal, such as the heart, the lungs, sweetbread,(brains) liver, and tongue)

*The Meat of the Matter* w/Ted Reader pt 1 of 4

Canada Day (July 1st) is around the corner for us Canadian burger lovers and that means a whole lot of barbecues will be working hard and thousands if not millions of burgers will be eaten across this 145 year old glorious and beautiful country of ours. The biggest celebrations happen in our Capital,Ottawa as well as Niagara Falls. Last year my Burger Broad lovin’ man and I put our bikes on the train to Niagara Falls, cycled around  and then did the Whirpool aero car that soars over the Great Gorge separating Canada from the U.S. At night we watched the festivities and spectacular fireworks over The Falls…And Then!……. of course we had to… rent the ‘you have to do it at least once, cheesy motel room with the heart shaped jacuzzi’ with mirrored walls too.HA!

So in celebration of Canada, in celebration of burgers, we welcome you to the first in a four part series where we get to *The Meat of the Matter* with Grill King, Ted Reader.

A few weeks ago we sat down with Ted to talk about burgers, frozen burgers specifically. We always say NEVER eat frozen patty grocery store burgers but after talking with Ted, we have a new respect for them…but still won’t eat them:) Find out why and stay tuned for part 2.

Hey Canadian Burger Lovers! What are you grilling on Canada Day? Live in Toronto or making the trip to Toronto?  Meet Ted Reader at the Eaton Centre

I won’t be there.I will be somewhere deep in a forest camping and grilling home made burgers, but of course:) maybe I’ll take pictures.Maybe I won’t. After all it is a holiday:)

Wishing my fellow Canadian Burger Lovers a very wonderful, happy and delicious Canada Day!

Happy Birthday Canada!

Ms.D-Madame of The BroadHouse
